Information on Service 'Alma-Ata Geomagnetic Observatory Data Service'

[Use this service from your browser]

Further access options are discussed below

The Alma-Ata Geomagnetic Observatory provides continuous monitoring of Earth's geomagnetic field. Located at 1300 meters above sea level in the foothills of the Tien Shan Mountains, approximately 10 km from Almaty, Kazakhstan, the observatory operates state-of-the-art equipment certified by INTERMAGNET, including the fluxgate magnetometer LEMI-008 and the proton Overhauser magnetometer POS-1.

The data service includes:

The service provides open access to minute- and hour-resolution data (XYZF components and the geomagnetic K-index) from 2003 onward via the Institute of Ionosphere’s website (https://ionos.kz/). Minute-resolution variation data since 2004 are also available through the INTERMAGNET network. Data prior to 2003 are available upon request.

The dataset is maintained by the Institute of Ionosphere and is additionally accessible through the Kazakhstan Space Weather Portal (https://ssa.fai.kz/, registration required), which also offers interactive plots and visualizations.

This service is published as follows:

local means it is listed on our front page, ivo_managed means it has a record in the VO registry.

Input Fields

The following fields are available to provide input to the service (with some renderers, some of these fields may be unavailable):

NameTable Head DescriptionUnitUCD
b_total B_total Total magnetic field strength. nT phys.magField
obs_time Timestamp Time of observation in UTC (yyyy-mm-ddThh:mm:ssZ). N/A time.epoch

Default Output Fields

The following fields are contained in the output by default. More fields may be available for selection; these would be given below in the VOTable output fields.

NameTable Head DescriptionUnitUCD
b_total B_total Total magnetic field strength. nT phys.magField
b_x B_x Magnetic field component in the X direction. nT phys.magField;pos.cartesian.x
b_y B_y Magnetic field component in the Y direction. nT phys.magField;pos.cartesian.y
b_z B_z Magnetic field component in the Z direction. nT phys.magField;pos.cartesian.z
obs_mjd Obs. MJD Time of the observation at the detector as MJD. d time.epoch
obs_time Timestamp Time of observation in UTC (yyyy-mm-ddThh:mm:ssZ). N/A time.epoch

VOTable Output Fields

The following fields are available in VOTable output. The verbosity level is a number intended to represent the relative importance of the field on a scale of 1 to 30. The services take a VERB argument. A field is included in the output if their verbosity level is less or equal VERB*10.

NameTable Head DescriptionUnitUCD Verb. Level
obs_time Timestamp Time of observation in UTC (yyyy-mm-ddThh:mm:ssZ). N/A time.epoch 20
obs_mjd Obs. MJD Time of the observation at the detector as MJD. d time.epoch 20
b_x B_x Magnetic field component in the X direction. nT phys.magField;pos.cartesian.x 20
b_y B_y Magnetic field component in the Y direction. nT phys.magField;pos.cartesian.y 20
b_z B_z Magnetic field component in the Z direction. nT phys.magField;pos.cartesian.z 20
b_total B_total Total magnetic field strength. nT phys.magField 20
